Teaching project Virtual Organology

The study of instruments is an elementary component of music teacher education. Only through a sound and comprehensive knowledge of construction, sound production and playing techniques prospective music teachers and musicologists can ensure high-quality application in their studies and their studies and profession. However, training is often limited to common instruments from their own cultural background, often due to the limited availability of instruments and instrumentalists. Against the backdrop of increasing globalisation and globalisation and the associated cultural exchange, it is also relevant to engage with cultures beyond Western music and the associated musical instruments and the associated musical instruments digitally and interactively. This is where virtual organology comes in. Through the use of virtual reality (VR) technologies offers the opportunity to explore foreign instruments without being physically present and to interact with them. At the same time, methods are being tested for transferring own instruments into virtual space and make them available to others.

The focus of this seminar is creating and designing a virtual virtual instrument exhibition. The result is a virtual instrument museum in which various musical instruments are are exhibited interactively. With the help of VR-Headsets, this museum can be visited by several people at the same time. They have the opportunity to exchange ideas and take notes in 3D using a virtual pen in order to to explore the instruments on display. The technical framework comes from the co-project VILLA VR.
